Naples Street Food Tour

3-hour walking tour

Our Naples Street Food experience starts in Piazza Bellini, where the statue of the opera composer Vincenzo Bellini overlooks the ruins of the ancient Greek walls of Naples.

Once you cross the square you will enter Via dei Tribunali, the ancient Greek “upper decumanus” where you will find the best pizza and street food in the world. Expect nothing less than an amazing cultural experience as you wander through the narrow streets of the city of Naples. The Neapolitan cuisine has ancient historical roots that date back to the Greek-Roman period that over the centuries has been enriched by the influence of the different cultures that controlled Naples and its kingdoms, such as that of Aragon and France. Our food specialist will then lead you to “Spaccanapoli” to visit a Pizzeria. The most notable Italian street food is pizza, sold in take-aways and bakeries, it is the most popular and best known creation of all Neapolitan cuisine.

During the tour you’ll stop to taste and learn from the best pizzerias, fry shops, taverns, and bars. The practice of buying and eating food in the streets dates back to very ancient times. A fabulous street food option for those wanting to enjoy an authentic and local experience is the Cuoppo, a “cone” of fried food. The origins of the dish probably date back to Roman epoch, or maybe earlier. Nowadays fried food can be bought in a variety of small shops around Naples. A popular fried dish is Pastacresciute, deep fried dough balls. Our experience will end in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore with the tasting of a sweet Sfogliatella and authentic Neapolitan espresso.

Piazza Bellini

Piazza Bellini

Located in central Naples, in 1886 the square acquired a statue by Alfonso Bazzico, depicting the famous composer Vincenzo Bellini, after which the piazza is named. During the 20th century the subterranean ruins of the former western walls of the Ancient Greek city of Neapolis were uncovered, and a portion of the ruined walls has been left exposed.

Via dei Tribunali

Via dei Tribunali

This street in the city center of Naples used to be the main decumanus, namely the main east-west street of the ancient Greek and then Roman city of Neapolis, paralleled to the south by the lower decumanus (now called Spaccanapoli) and to the north by the upper decumanus. The three decumani were - and still are - intersected by numerous streets called cardini, together they form the grid of the ancient city.

Spaccanapoli

Spaccanapoli

Translated literally Spaccanapoli means "Naples splitter". The name is fitting since the long, straight road seems to divide the historic centre of the city in two. Therefore, the importance of this street lies in its history, being one of the three main roads or decumani that traversed ancient Neapolis when it was founded in 580 BC. While exploring Spaccanapoli you'll also find many souvenir and gift shops, as well as bakeries and restaurants.

Piazza San Domenico Maggiore

Piazza San Domenico Maggiore

Located along the lower decumanus is the Spaccanapoli, this piazza is one of the most important squares of Naples. It houses the church and the homonymous obelisk, erected by the Neapolitans in celebration for escaping an epidemic of the plague. Among the buildings that surround the square is the 15th-century Palazzo Petrucci, the Palazzo di Saluzzo Corigliano and the Palazzo di Sangro of Casacalenda.
